How Do I Become Orthodox?

“[I write] to make all men see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things; that through the Church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known…” (Ephesians 3:9–10)

Glory to God! We welcome all who desire to enter the Orthodox Church and partake of the fullness of the Faith. Truly and without hyperbole, this is the most important thing we will do in our entire lives!

The very first step, if you have not already done so, is to visit. The Orthodox Faith is all about direct experience of the Divine Mystery, and so coming and seeing is the only true way to learn.

After a little time coming and learning, speak with Fr. Stephen. He can offer you more detailed guidance, all along the way.

The journey into the Orthodox Church involves three basic stages: the Inquirer stage is when one has an initial interest or draw to the Faith, seeking to know more; the Catechumenate comes when both the person and their Priest feel they are ready to commit to more formal preparation toward entering the Faith; finally, at the proper time the person receives Holy Illumination through the sacraments of Baptism and Chrismation, becoming fully an Orthodox Christian.

This journey usually takes a full year. It involves, most importantly, attending and participating in the worship services of the Church; intentional, guided study through reading and attending the Inquirers Class; fellowship with the parish at meals and activities; and a guided personal practice of prayer and fasting.

The great weight of this journey means it is worth taking time to walk properly. Joining our entire selves to the Body of Christ, willingly being transformed into His image, is neither a quick nor simple process. Patience is one of the first offerings we make, along with repentance, humility, and love.
